I have owned Explorers before and have always been a happy Ford customer. But now I am seriously considering the purchase of an Edge SEL. It's a sharp looking vehicle, gets a decent amount of good reviews for it's power, comfort, storage ability, etc. There are some bad posts and reviews here and there, but that's with every car (always someone to complain about something on every car I guess).

But I keep reading a very alarming bad review on rating websites that I never see mentioned in posts by current owners.......

What's with the many reports of dangerously bad brakes?? I have seen posts about brake dust, but I want to hear about it's stopping ability. My wife will be the primary driver and our current Mazda6 stops on a dime and I would like to know if the Edge will do the same. It has been rated as having VERY POOR stopping distances from 60-0 mph.

Anyone have problems with the brakes (other than dust) ???

Thanks a million.

You do the math.

Edge
*60-0 mph 146 ft
curb wt. 4073 lbs

Explorer
**60-0 mph 125 ft
curb wt. 4531 lbs

The Explorer is 458 lbs heavier. What's wrong with this picture?

i was riding on the endge on my way home when i start speeding with this bora MKV (WV)... suddenly i had to press the brakes all the way down, no fatigue, no problems.. maybe it takes longer to brake than my old escape (due to weight) but brakes seems to be better.. , escape tend to star vibrating after a forced brake.. ede doen not do that..

hope this helps..

I ordered my Edge on Jan. 15, picked it up on Feb. 28...as of today, it has 4500 miles on it, and I have had NO problems what so ever with anything. It stops on a dime (I'll give you nine cents change), everything works perfectly...I am averaging 20mpg in city driving....those of you who are complaining about less mpg, don't be so heavy with the foot....

KVR Performance now have replacement rotors and carbon-metallic pads for the Edge!!!

I used a set of the cross-drilled rotors and carbon-metallic pads on our Focus and they were fantastic. With the kind of driving I was doing we went through a set of the stock Bendix crap on the front in around 25-28 thousand kilometres. Our first set of KVR's lasted 96,000km!! They cost less than the stock junk, produced almost no dust and the feel and performance were amazing. I'm really looking forward to fitting a set of their new J-Hook rotors.

$CAD165 per pair (front or rear) for the J-Hook Slotted OEM replacement rotors and $CAD95 per pair for the front and $CAD85 per pair for the rear carbon metallic pads.

The rotors and pads are not listed yet because they - like the car - are so new. I had to give KVR the Ford part numbers and they matched up the parts from other Ford pieces. They tell me they'll have the Edge parts listed soon but for now anyone can order them direct from KVR by using the following Ford part numbers:

Front Rotors - 7T4Z1125A
Rear Rotors - 7T4Z2C026A

Front Pads - 7T4Z2001A
Rear Pads - 7T4Z2200A

Not sure if you can get the 2-piece or cross-drilled rotors yet but the slotted and J-Hook are available.

I got the PIAA bulbs from Performance Improvements but you can order them direct from PIAA if you want.

I am having problems with my breaking system. I have 7,200 miles and it seems that every morning when I get in the car and leave...the first 3 or 4 times I break - there is a grinding sound. It stops after that.

Anyone heard of this?? :?

I'm having the same issue as nolanative - almost metal on metal sound, (sounds like from the front end) first thing in the morning, when I leave the office to go to lunch, etc.. problem is that it doesn't happen EVERY time, so when I took it in for the first service, of course - "customer concern could not be replicated" was what I was told. Service tech said they looked the at pads, rotors, everything and all looks good. It doesn't SOUND good! any suggestions?

My Edge 2008 also has the problem nolanative stated. The mechanic couldn't 'replicate' that, but the first few days after the maintenance the problem was less severe.

I hope they know how to fix it soon.
