Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, to closely track cars as they age.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.

For the details, and to sign up to help out:

Vehicle reliability research

Update: latest results

With the exception of the 2007s with AWD, which often have a leaking seal in the power transfer unit for the all-wheel-drive, the Edge has had a low repair rate.

I hardly get the info for free. I pay for the server, the web designer, the data analyst, and so forth, and spend about a hundred hours a week on it.

That aside, what you ought to have read is that those who help provide the data will get access to the results for free.

But you seem to think that everyone should get the results for free, even if they did nothing to make them possible. Why should other people go through the trouble of filling out the surveys so you can get the results for free, without doing anything yourself?

You won't find a fairer deal anywhere else. Go tell Consumer Reports they should give you free access to their results because they don't have to pay people to complete the surveys. With them, even people who complete the surveys pay for access.

Sorry but did you not come to this web site looking...??

We didn't ask you to do all that you claim you did or will do...I never saw Consumer Reports ever do that here...They buy the products and test it themselves and if you buy the mag.reports you get to read what they found out...
This is a free sharing information web site on Ford Edge Cars...What you get of it here and give to it here is free...
Why do you feel you can use it to sell you're reports and not get called on the fact...???

Currently I'm not selling anything.

The reason not to freely post all results is that this removes a major incentive for people to participate. And if people don't participate, there will be no results. Simple as that. When I first structured the research this way--I initially just asked people to participate in order to make the results possible--the rate at which people signed up jumped tenfold. I didn't make the world this way, but must work with it the way it is.

Still just five of these signed up. A shame, as I'd really like to start gathering data on the Edge.

In comparison, I already have 13 GMC Acadias and 20 Saturn Outlooks enrolled. Data collection started on those last month, and I'll have the first results in May.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Up to 14 for the Edge, but also up to 63 for the new GM crossovers.

Where are all the Edge owners?

Up to 32 for the Edge, vs. over 90 for the GM crossovers.

You're very welcom, I appreciate the help.

This thread needs to be updated. The results linked above are based on data as old as CR's :D

Here are the latest results:

TrueDelta Vehicle Reliability Survey results

We have discovered that the power transfer unit in AWD Edges is prone to link. As a result, while the repair rate for the FWD is better than average, that for the AWD is much worse.

Number of 2007 Edges now enrolled: 98

Number of 2008s: 39 -- especially need more of these

We have updated results for the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007 FWD: 28, better than average

2007 AWD: 95, worse than average (PTU seal, as before)

2008: 28, identical to 2007 FWD and better than average.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. We especially need more 2007s and 2009s.

We now have a separate results page for each model that includes the results for competitors. The page for the Ford Edge:

We've updated the results for the Edge to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008 FWD: 60, about average, marginal sample size--actual repair rate probably lower

2008 AWD: 88, worse than average

2007 FWD: 16, better than average

2007 AWD: 99, worse than average

The AWD continues to require more repairs owing to a common problem with the PTU seal.

A big thank you to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We've updated the results for the Edge to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008 FWD: 53, about average, marginal sample size--actual repair rate probably lower

2008 AWD: 99, worse than average

2007 FWD: 28, better than average

2007 AWD: 98, worse than average

The AWD continues to require more repairs owing to a common problem with the PTU seal.

A big thank you to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

Especially need more FWDs and 2009s.
